JoJo
This
is for all the great folks at Loving Touch that have played a part in
keeping my pup hale and hearty and still able to compete in agility as
she turns 10 years old. If my memory serves, JoJo and I first
visited Loving Touch about 8 years ago. At the time she was a
pudgy Pembroke, weighing in at over 36 pounds. Thanks to advice
from LTAC and some other corgi friends (and a fair amount of will power
on my part), JoJo now usually tips the scales in the 27 pound range.
Lighter is better, especially for agility, but you know Corgis and their
boundless appetites!
Anyway,
Loving Touch staff members have been of priceless assistance in getting
JoJo and her human through a number of health crises, both major and
minor, not to mention the emotional loss in the Fall of 2006, of our
dear Labrador Retriever, Ruth Anne, who lived to a ripe old age of 15
thanks in large part to you great folks- but that is another story.
JoJo has had a tooth pulled as part of her never ending conflict with
the dreaded vacuum cleaner, during which extraction procedure it was
found that her heart was a little more sensitive to anesthesia than we
thought. That was scary, but now we know to watch for that issue
when anesthesia is necessary. We found that JoJo still had
dewclaws (at least portions of them) on her front feet when a bone
infection developed in one them. Just days before we lost Ruth
Anne, JoJo and I competed in an agility trial and I pushed her way too
far which caused her hamstring difficulties. Thanks to advice on
supplements, massage methods, heat socks and more, JoJo is still able to
compete with gusto.
JoJo
and I just competed in our first agility trial of 2008, having not
competed in six months. JoJo and I were competing in the NADAC
Open level for the first time, having advanced out of the Novice level.
Arriving each morning about 7 am and not leaving until 7:30 p.m., I had
some concern that we would be able to make the course times. Any
worries I had about my 10 year old girl’s speed were dispelled during
our Saturday Tunnelers run. We qualified with 4 seconds to spare!
Considering that I was in recovery mode from a nasty flu bug and was
lucky to be breathing one week before the trial, it was a wonder JoJo
did not leave her handler in the dust!
Sunday
we only missed qualifying in the Tunnelers run by .09 seconds- slow
handler again. JoJo had all her speed in the Jumpers run and this
time the handler stayed on course. Although there was a problem
with the stopwatch, we were told by the person doing the timing that we
were “way faster” than the maximum course time. Needless to
say, I was a very proud handler this weekend!
On
behalf of JoJo and me, here is a great big “THANK YOU” to everyone
at Loving Touch! We could not do this without you!
